I research the synthesis and characterization of novel catalytic materials for use in the abatement of pollutants created by the internal combustion engine. The materials being studied are based on inexpensive and abundant metals such as copper and palladium. The characterization of these materials is done using operando FTIR, in-situ EXAFS, and temperature programmed reactions. These techniques allow for the identification of the chemical intermediates and active sites responsible for the catalytic activity of these materials and the development of important structure-property relationships.
